Open Water

May 2023 - current.

A project by Nora Almeida.

Open Water is a site-specific research, oral history, and public art project about swimming and flooding. The project involves: swimming with people and groups in urban locations in and outside of the United States; conducting oral histories with swimmers and the public; co-facilitating shoreline encounters and stewardship events; and producing multimedia artwork in collaboration with community members and other artists.

For this project, I created a map (below) of New York that emphasizes the waterways to ask passersby what water they see and interact with the most in New York City.

June 8-10 - HASTAC

I assisted in the creation and upkeep of an exhibition space for the Pratt Institute’s HASTAC 2023 Critical Making and Social Justice conference.

As the summer progressed, we conducted a number of pop-up oral history, counter-mapping and art-making events at Coney Island Creek. The map I designed was present and used to record the waterways folks interact with.

July 15 - City of Water Day

August 28 - Cyanotype & Creek Clean-up

Sept 2 & 30 - Pop-up Counter-mapping
